Throughout his career as a West Michigan performer and recording artist, Matt Young, has also been inspiring young musicians as a private music teacher.
Introducing his students to the joy music can bring to their lives, is at the core of Matt’s teaching philosophy.
Matt plays acoustic, electric and pedal steel guitars, mandolin, bass and ukulele. He is also lead vocalist with the Sweet J. band.
He recognizes well, the importance of mentors and teachers from his own experience growing up. “Several people inspired me along the way,” Matt noted. Professional musician and founder of the Blue Star Camp, in South Haven, Jimmy Dillon, was one of his most influential mentors. Matt taught music at the camp for six years starting in 2002 and has been teaching privately ever since.
Matt Young’s varied music career includes studio session work at several recording studios, most notably River City Studios. He has also performed with Eric Clapton, John Mayer and Rolling Stone's keyboardist Chuck Leavell and singer-songwriter Matt Giraud.
As a performer with the band Sweet Japonic (later renamed Sweet J.) their band received Best Rock Album Award at the WYCE Jammie Awards in 2005, 2007 and 2009.
When he’s not performing or teaching, Matt enjoys outdoor adventures of all kinds. He’s an avid fly fisherman.
