Mr. Matt

Mr. Matt grew up in Grand Rapids Michigan where he started playing guitar at a young age. He performed on WYCE at 9 years old. He constantly found himself jamming, performing, and learning from other musicians in the area. He loves all sorts of guitarists; from Jimmy Hendrix to John Mayer.

Matt uses a vast array of influences to provide a unique experience for his students. He loves grooving on the bass guitar and "jamming the pocket" with his band. He also has a love for the mandolin for its country and folk flavor.

Matt Young’s varied music career includes studio session work at several recording studios, most notably River City Studios. He has also performed with Eric Clapton, John Mayer, and Rolling Stone's keyboardist Chuck Leavell and singer-songwriter Matt Giraud. He is currently the lead singer of the band "Sweet J" who received the "Best Rock Album Award" at the WYCE Jammie Awards in 2005, 2007, and 2009.


When he’s not performing or teaching, Matt enjoys outdoor adventures and is an avid fly fisherman.


He performs with his band locally at several different venues.You may also catch some of his students performing as well. Several of his students have expanded their careers as professional musicians: Current student Lana Chalfoun recently released her first solo album; former student Max Lockwood plays bass for Seth and Daisy Mae; Alex Austin plays guitar for Nicholas James and the Band Wagon, and Chris Newburg is the guitarist for Gunner and the Grizzly Boys. Former student, Sebastian Lagenbach is studying guitar in college.
